When the Lights Come On

I’m not a reference librarian so I don’t really have a professional reason to be concerned about this, but I am an amateur researcher. Having my search results slanted by past searches is more than a bit annoying. I’m going to try Bing as a search engine option on one tab, and compare the results. I’m aware of much of the wonderful things that Google has added to their services, including the cloud technology that allows my bookmarks and other preferences to follow me from device to device. I like it. But no, I don’t need Google’s help in this manner.

And the last comment about Google’s search algorithm becoming supportive of your personal biases, was something that I’d avoided acknowledging. But of course Google is about selling stuff, it’s not about me, so for the benefit of their sponsors they are going to rearrange the results. Yuck.
